Blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of arteries. Blood pressure is measured with two numbers, systolic and diastolic. Systolic, the first number, measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats. Diastolic, or the second number, measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart is between beats. High blood pressure usually develops over time. Diabetes and obesity can increase the risk of developing high blood pressure.
